As United Methodists, We Believe…
  • A United Methodist is a Christian who has professed faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, put his or her whole trust in Christ’s grace and promised to serve him as Lord as a member of The United Methodist Church, a worldwide church that welcomes persons of all ages, nations, and races.
  • We affirm the historic Christian faith as summarized in the Apostle’s Creed and Nicene Creed.
    • We believe in the Triune God, the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
    • We Believe every person is a beloved child of God.
    • We Believe in the church as the community called to be instruments of God’s presence and coming reign in Jesus Christ.
    • We Believe the Bible reveals the Word of God;
    • We Believe in the final triumph of God’s reign of compassion, justice, generosity, and peace;
  • We are Rooted in God’s Grace
    • Our heritage is rooted in a deep and profound understanding of God’s grace, which flows from God’s love for us. Grace can be defined as God’s gift of freely given love and mercy. We can do nothing to deserve or earn it.
      • Prevenient Grace: God’s love surrounds all persons prior to our consciousness or awareness of its presence. It is always available, but can be refused. This grace stirs within us a desire to know the God who actively seeks us. This grace allows us to discern (learn to understand) differences between good and evil. It allows us to choose good, moving us to turn toward God, which is called repentance, and accept God’s gift in faith.
      • Justifying Grace: God reaches out to the repentant believer (meaning one who is turning toward God) with accepting and pardoning love. In justification, we are, through faith, forgiven for our sin and restored to God’s favor. We are justified, set right, with God. In accepting justifying grace through faith, the image of God is renewed in us, our hearts are changed,
      • Sanctifying Grace: We believe that God’s acceptance and pardon that come through justifying grace do not end God’s saving work, which continues to nurture us in grace. The Holy Spirit enables us to grow in knowledge and love of God and neighbor. While faith is the only response essential for salvation, our faith is made evident through good works.
